Variational implicit solvation models (VISM), because of their relatively low computational cost and satisfactory accuracy, have been widely used in the solvation analysis of biological systems at molecular level. Central in the construction of VISM is an interface separating the solute and the solvent. Compared with sharp-interface models, diffuse-interface VISMs have shown some initial success in improving the efficiency and accuracy of the solvation energy estimation of biomolecules.
